The Global Environmental Change Focus Group sponsors the Stephen Schneider Memorial Lecture at the Fall AGU meeting. The 2016 lecture will be presented by Dr. David S. Battisti, the Tamaki Endowed Chair of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington, on “Connecting Climate Science to Policy: from Global Food Production to the U.S. Supreme Court”, on Thursday, December 15 from 1:40 PM to 2:40 PM in Moscone West 2022/2024. Professor Battisti’s research is focused on understanding the natural variability of the climate system. He is especially interested in understanding how the interactions between the ocean, atmosphere, land and sea ice lead to variability in climate on time scales from seasonal to decades. His recent research addresses questions of how climate variability and climate change impact food production in critical agricultural regions of the world.
Dr. Schneider, the Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies, professor of biological sciences, professor (by courtesy) of civil and environmental engineering, and a senior fellow in the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University, died on 19 July 2010 at the age of 65 while traveling in Europe.
The Schneider Lecture will be live-streamed on AGU On-Demand for those AGU members unable to attend in person.
