The Global Environmental Change Focus Group sponsors the Stephen Schneider Memorial Lecture at the Fall AGU meeting. Dr. Schneider, the Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies, professor of biological sciences, professor (by courtesy) of civil and environmental engineering, and a senior fellow in the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University, died on 19 July 2010 at the age of 65 while traveling in Europe.
The 2017 lecture will be presented by Dr. Linda O. Mearns, Senior Scientist and Director of the Weather and Climate Impacts Assessment Science Program at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, on “Uncertainty in Climate Change Research: an Integrated Approach”, on Thursday, December 14 from 1:40 PM to 2:40 PM in the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center – La Nouvelle AB Ballroom.
The lecture will be recorded for later viewing and will also be viewable remotely in real time using the AGU On-Demand option. Further information about how to access this option will be posted here at a later date.
The 2016 lecture was presented by Dr. David S. Battisti, the Tamaki Endowed Chair of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington, on “Connecting Climate Science to Policy: from Global Food Production to the U.S. Supreme Court”, on Thursday, December 15 from 1:40 PM to 2:40 PM in Moscone West 2022/2024.
The 2015 lecture was presented by Dr. Donald Wuebbles, the Harry E. Preble Endowed Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, on “Extreme Weather in a Changing Climate”, on Tuesday, December 15 from 1:40 PM to 2:40 PM in Moscone West 2022-2024.
The 2014 lecture was presented by Dr. Christopher B. Field of the Carnegie Institution for Science, Department of Global Ecology, on “From Climate Change Impacts to Climate Change Risks”, and can be viewed on the AGU video archive website.
The 2013 lecture was presented by Dr. Gavin A. Schmidt, climatologist and climate modeler at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Sciences in New York City, on “What should a climate scientist advocate for? The 2012 lecture was presented by Dr. Warren M. The inaugural Stephen Schneider Memorial Lecture was presented in 2010 by Dr. Michael Oppenheimer, Princeton University, on the topic “Scientists, Expert Judgement, and Public Policy: What is Our Proper Role?” and can be viewed on the AGU video archive website at
